Redcar Course Guide
Redcar stages racing throughout the summer but there are two distinct Listed highlights at the North Yorkshire track, both of which are staged on the same card in late September/early October.
Run over six furlongs, the Listed Two-year-old Trophy is the most lucrative race of the season ran at the North Yorkshire course. The contest usually attracts a field of in excess of twenty runners and some decent juveniles have won the valuable contest before picking up Pattern races later in their careers. The roll of honour includes Pipalong (1998), Captain Rio (2001), Somnus (2002), and Limato (2014).
The Listed Guisborough Stakes ran over seven furlongs for three-year-olds and older, is the other Listed race at Redcar. The Elite Racing Club-owned New Seeker took the race for trainer Clive Cox 2006 while Godolphin have triumphed with Gonfilia (2004), Council Member (2005) and Il Warrd (2009). In 2013 Top Notch Tonto won the race before finishing second in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on his next start.
Redcar also stages the Zetland Gold Cup, which traditionally takes place on the second bank holiday Monday in May. Run over a mile and a half the prestigious handicap has been won by some notable horses including the multiple Group 3-winning Blue Monday, who won the race in 2005 for trainer Roger Charlton while the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Kingdom of Fife ran out an impressive two and a half length winner in 2009.
Advance Going
Narrow, left-handed, oval track which is approximately a mile and three quarters in extent. Races between five furlongs and one mile are run on the straight track. The course is perfectly flat, and with the exception of its two sharp bends, provides a very fair test. The course drains well, and when conditions are riding fast, it can sometimes be difficult to make up ground from off the pace.
A few ridges have developed at Redcar over the years and you definitely need to keep on the right side of those. The bottom turn is tricky to navigate too - there’s been more than one problem there - and the straight rides tremendously long. So, although it’s flat enough, races seem to change three or four times after the home turn. If you happen to be in front with one breathing down your neck, you have little chance of getting home, so patience is the key. Playing your cards late is the best option.
