Beverley Course Guide
Beverley hosts racing throughout the summer with two distinct features races, the Listed Hillary Needler Trophy staged in May and the Listed Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes in August, both of which are run over the minimum trip.
The Hilary Needler Trophy is restricted to two-year-old fillies and many smart fillies have taken the race before going on to better things notably Attraction in 2003, who went on to win both the British and Irish 1,000 Guineas the following season. The Listed Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes is open to three-year-olds and upwards and was won in both 2004 and 2005 by Chookie Heiton for jockey Tom Eaves and trainer Ian Semple.
Advance Going
Right handed. The round course, just over a mile and three furlongs in extent, isn't particularly stiff despite the uphill finish, this modified by the downhill turn into the straight and the relatively short run in of just two and a half furlongs, favoring those ridden with enterprise. The five-furlong track has a dog-leg to the right and is on the rise throughout, so is on the testing side even in normal conditions, whilst in soft it takes some getting, particularly for two-year-olds early in the season.
I have always liked Beverley and, despite what many people think, it’s a good galloping track. The ground does tend to run away from you as you turn into the straight, but the home bend is bigger than some give it credit for and, if you happen to get pushed wide, you need to be on much the best horse to win. Jockeyship - and patience - are therefore very important on the round course, whereas gate speed is the key to the sprint track. If you miss the kick there, all you can do is drop in and ride for luck.
