Bangor-on-Dee Course Guide
Situated just over the border in North Wales, racing has taken place at Bangor-on-Dee since 1859 and it hosts jumping action throughout the year.
Runners at Bangor-on-Dee are nearly always on the turn, but that hasn’t stopped some exceptional horses from running there before going onto greatness including Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman, Grand National hero Amberleigh House and Stayers’ Hurdle winner Iris’s Gift.
Advance Going
Left handed, fairly sharp, minor surface undulations. Races usually well run, especially on hurdle course, possibly on account of runners being on the turn pretty much throughout. Fences generally regarded as being fairly stiff for a lesser NH course, though recent evidence doesn't support this.
I always rated Bangor-on-Dee one of the quicker tracks, but that’s only the case when the ground is on the faster side. It may sound crazy, and it obviously can’t be that way in reality, but you seem to be going downhill all the way round. So you need a horse that’s able to travel and if you’re off the bridle early on at Bangor-on-Dee, you’ll struggle, because the others will get away from you. The fences provide a decent test - not overly-demanding, but certainly no walkover - and they suit fast, accurate jumpers.
