A bumper that has sometimes been won by a smart performer in this sphere (such as Envoi Allen, Kilcruit and Facile Vega) but the bunched finish and rather messy nature of the race means that this year’s winner cannot be rated quite so highly.
The pace varied, decent early, steadied mid-race then a dash for home resulting in quite a slow final 1f. The winner’s final 4f of 58.52s translates to a 104.8% finishing speed.
COLCANNON (f136 here and previously) had the best form going in, courtesy of his defeat of the useful Heads Up at Galway, and reproduced it here, held up travelling strongly before improving steadily to lead over 1f out, going well, then having to be ridden out but never looking like being overhauled. He ought to do well over hurdles when the time comes.
SORTUDO (f134 here and previously) ran to the same level as when second to Carrigmoornaspruce, coming from a bit off the pace to lead in the penultimate furlong, swept aside by the winner then keeping on quite well without being knocked about.
HE CAN’T DANCE (f134 here, 120 previously) stepped up plenty on the form of his Navan win but seemed not quite good enough, with every chance in the closing stages.
KOKTAIL BRUT (f134 here, 130 previously) ran his best race yet, improving from mid-field (where he had been quite free) to have every chance.
GREEN SPLENDOUR (f132+ here and previously) gave the impression there is better still to come, a bit free in mid-field and caught flat-footed 3f out before rallying well (ran comfortably the fastest final 1f in the field).
I STARTED A JOKE (f131 here, 120 previously) was well backed despite having plenty to find on form and improved a fair bit despite shaping as if more of a test would have helped, outpaced over 2f out, switched and keeping on.
FRIARY ROAD (f112 here, 128 previously)
COOLBERRIN HILL (f106 here, 124 previously)
GOOD DEAL (f0 here, 125 previously)
