A good-sized field, including the third from the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and two smart 2-y-os making their reappearances, but in the event none of those gave their running and the bare form has a substandard look to it, less than 4 lengths separating the first eight home at the end of a race run at a steady pace (105% finishing speed), with the overall time much the same as that recorded by the 97-rated handicapper Visualisation a bit later on. The winner’s rating is the lowest in many years, and much lower than Winter (118), Alpha Centauri (115) and Hermosa (116) in the three years prior to 2020. There may be some good fillies in there, perhaps the winner, but they did not show it conclusively on the day.
EMPRESS JOSEPHINE (106 here, 100 previously) has done well in a short time and not only bagged a big prize but is the one in the field most likely to improve, which will be necessary in stronger Group 1s than this. She was held up mid to rear, was bumped 3f out and took a while to respond as the pace quickened before running on strongly to lead on the line. A sister to Minding (who was second in this in 2016, the same year she won the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and other top races at 8f/10f), she should be at least as good at 10f, and may well stay 12f in due course, her striding (2.34 strides/second maximum, 2.17 minimum) more typical of a middle-distance filly than a miler.
JOAN OF ARC (106 here, 102 previously) may still do better, having improved with each run so far, though she got a canny ride as things unfolded, always in the first 2, leading again in the final 1f but just unable to hold on despite responding well. A sister to the Guineas winner Gleneagles, she will probably stay 10f.
NO SPEAK ALEXANDER (104 here and previously) matched her Athasi-winning form under a good ride, leading/disputing and racing well within herself, coming again after being re-joined but unable to pull out more late on. She is speedily bred and this may well be a maximum trip for her.
BELLE IMAGE (104 here, 90 previously) ran remarkably well, though there had been one or 2 hints at something like this previously, travelling comfortably held up and running on well in the last 2f but never nearer, getting marginally the biggest sectional upgrade of all. She would be no certainty to stay further on breeding.
FANTASY LADY (103 here, 101 previously) ran at least as well as previously, blinkered/tongue tied for the first time, keeping on from mid/rear. She won a listed race as a 2-y-o and should be able to repeat the feat placed carefully.
FRIENDLY (100 here, 82 previously) excelled herself, not the first from the stable to do that faced with a stiff task, travelling comfortably and keeping on from mid/rear. A sister to the good 7f winner Gustav Klimt, she will probably stay a bit further.
PRETTY GORGEOUS (100 here, 114 previously) was comfortably best on form (won Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket at 2 yrs) but had missed the trials and Newmarket and, a robust individual, might have needed this, soon close up but wide before edging right and finding just one pace.
SENSE OF STYLE (99 here, 101 previously) ran creditably despite getting a bit messed around somewhat when trying to improve from midfield, though one paced when in the clear. There is some stamina on her dam’s side.
THINKING OF YOU (94 here, 100 previously) is operating a bit below the level she showed as a 2-y-o.
FEV ROVER (94 here, 108 previously) met traffic on a few occasions, though might not have been helping her jockey 100% before repassing a few late on.
SWEET GARDENIA (92 here, 95 previously) was a bit slowly away and always towards the rear.
SZIGET (89 here, 94 previously) was held up and never on terms, briefly short of room late on.
MISS AMULET (89 here, 110 previously) offered little encouragement on what was the softest ground she has encountered, taking a while to settle. Her busy 2-y-o season saw her win the 6f Lowther Stakes and finish third at 8f at the Breeders’ Cup.
ZAFFY’S PRIDE (87 here, 99 previously) needs to settle better to stay beyond 7f.
