This is not quite the race it once was, but it still usually takes a useful effort to win or go close in it, and that was the case again this time. Two miles on quite a sharp track tests speed more than stamina, but ground that was “good to soft” ensured it was a bit more of a test than sometimes, while there was also largely a sound pace (winner’s final 4f of 54.85s, 105.6% finishing speed).
CRACKING RHAPSODY (h139 here, 136 previously) has done terrific work for his small stable this season, running consistently well bar in the Greatwood at Cheltenham and winning 3 races. He was never far away, going with enthusiasm, challenged 2 out and dug deep to prevail after the second had been going better than him and he had jumped left at the last.
KABRAL DU MATHAN (h141 here and previously) maintained his record of never having finished out of the first 2 and could plausibly make into something better than a handicapper next season, for all that he was beaten on merit here, close up, gradually recovering from an error at halfway, going just about best as he challenged approaching the last but merely keeping on.
OOH BETTY (h134+ here and previously) ran well and as if there may be more to come, close up until outpaced 2 out then rallying so strongly at the death that she was in front shortly after the line.
DYSART ENOS (h137 here, 135 previously) ran well with no excuses, always close up, tending to hang left then briefly short of room at the last, one paced.
WELSH CHARGER (h129 here, 130 previously) ran well once more, not always fluent but well there most of the way.
BUNTING (h135 here, 139 previously) has one piece of form that makes him look well-treated but could not get into it having been held up here.
