Expert Analysis

Reporter:

There were doubts about all of the six contenders beforehand, regarding form and/or suitability to the test at hand, but little question that the first two put up very smart performances in the end to come clear, the time seeming good compared to the other chases on the card. The ground was officially “good”, despite some slow going-stick readings, but no quicker than “good to soft” judged on times. The sectionals confirm that this was well-run.

LOSTINTRANSLATION (c158 here, 164? previously) spent last season in the wilderness but another wind operation returned him to somewhere near his best against a couple of penalised rivals, tracking the pace travelling well before driven 3 out, leading under pressure between the last 2 and ridden out. This trip would be a minimum for him, and he stayed 26f well enough in a slowly run race to finish third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2020. He would need to do a bit more again to convince that he is still as good now as he was back then.

MASTER TOMMYTUCKER (c160 here and previously) came on plenty for his recent run over hurdles, back at what may be close to his ideal trip, making most until between the last 2. He can be hit and miss in terms of jumping but was mostly good here until a mistake at the last. He can set quite a pace when on form, as was the case here.

DASHEL DRASHER (c149 here, 162 previously) was not discredited but could not get to the front on ground that was less testing than for his trio of good wins at this course and distance last term and weakened after 3 out. He is likely to be back to close to his best with this behind him.

DEFI DU SEUIL (c125 here, ? previously) has lost his way of late and there was little sign of a revival here despite another wind operation, travelling well enough held up but soon beaten when asked for more going to 3 out.

PISTOL WHIPPED (c0 here, 153 previously) had a fair bit on but showed little even so, losing his place at halfway and behind when pulled up after 4 out.

BENNYS KING (c0 here, 154 previously) is knocking on now and has plenty of questions to answer after being pulled up for the second start in a row, jumping none too fluently.
