A race stronger on quantity than quality by G1 standards, but it did feature about the best European-trained sprinter beforehand (Lazzat) and several others capable of smart form. The outcome – a 200/1 winner! – was thoroughly unexpected but there is nothing in the sectionals and overall time (a quick one, reflecting a sound pace) to suggest that it was a fluke, other than that being played late might have been a minor advantage. The field were spread quite widely, with those drawn 12 and higher in the centre and lower more towards the far side, but there was probably no track bias. The winner’s final 2f of 23.67s, on what was “good to firm” going on the straight course, gives a 101.0% finishing speed.
POWERFUL GLORY (117 here, 106 previously) got this from somewhere, the most obvious places being that he had been quite promising as a 2yo and that this was his 2nd run after a wind operation, but he had run abjectly less than a month before when last in a minor contest at Beverley, and this has to go down as the biggest of turn-ups. He was restrained into rear, travelling well, then switched right and set alight after 2f out, improving rapidly to throw down a challenge in the final 1f and getting up near the finish. He is probably a sprinter and could do well next year if backing this up.
LAZZAT (116 here, 120 previously) was probably a fraction below his Royal Ascot-winning form but essentially ran creditably while encountering a Tartar in Powerful Glory, going right leaving his stall, never far away, pressing the leader 2f out and going on soon after but gradually overhauled under pressure in the final 1f.
QUINAULT (112 here, 112? previously) is rather hit and miss but put his best foot forward for a fine effort, leading much of the way and sticking to his task when headed.
NO HALF MEASURES (109 here, 113 previously) was back close to her July Cup-winning form, bumped at the start, improving from mid-field to have a chance early in the penultimate 1f then one paced.
INISHERIN (110 here, 116 previously) ran respectably, which was an improvement on his 3 most recent efforts, chasing the pace and keeping on, again shaping as if he may be more at home at 7f now.
RAYEVKA (96+ here, 110 previously) shaped better than the result and is probably still in reasonable heart, set a bit to do before improving well (2nd only to the winner sectionally from 3f out to 1f out) then flattening out.
MONTASSIB (95+ here, 115 previously) must have had his problems and showed a little following a slow start.
SPY CHIEF (94 here, 107 previously)
FLORA OF BERMUDA (90 here, 112 previously)
BIG MOJO (89 here, 119 previously) ran poorly, chasing on the near side but outpaced late on. He is probably worth a try at 7f.
KIND OF BLUE (89 here, 114 previously) disappointed, travelling comfortably then carrying his head a bit awkwardly, later found to have lost a shoe.
RUN TO FREEDOM (88 here, 109 previously)
ART POWER (88 here, 109 previously)
TEN BOB TONY (88 here, 111 previously)
JAMES’S DELIGHT (84 here, 109 previously)
KING’S GAMBLE (78 here, 106 previously)
KING CUAN (73 here, 108 previously) was slowly away and never really going.
WITNESS STAND (63 here, 116 previously) was outpaced from halfway dropped to 6f, disappointing even so.
IBERIAN (62 here, 101 previously)
