Yarmouth Course Guide
The Norfolk venue hosts racing throughout the summer, with the highlight being the John Musker Fillies Stakes. Run over one mile and two furlongs and open to fillies aged three years and older, the listed event often attracts a sizable field – it is the highlight of Yarmouth’s three-day Eastern meeting.
The course at Yarmouth underwent extensive work in 2015 to level the home-straight and provide one of the best straight mile courses in the county.
A notable track for Maiden races, some exceptional horses have started their career at Yarmouth before going on to global stardom; seven-time Group 1-winning filly Ouija Board and Dubai World Cup Winner Dubai Millennium both won Yarmouth Maidens.
Advance Going
A narrow, left-handed, oval track, about thirteen furlongs in extent, with a run-in of five furlongs. There is a straight mile course. Apart from a slight fall just before the run-in, the track is perfectly flat, with sharpish bends. The straight was levelled to remove surface undulations and then resurfaced in 2015.
If the recent relaying work at Yarmouth restores the course to what it used to be, which is obviously the idea, it could be one of the best galloping tracks in Britain. Yes, it had developed ridges, hence the changes they’ve made, but it’s a lovely fair course. The home straight is big and long, giving jockeys plenty of time from the turn in, and, if it’s going to be even flatter than of old when the relaying is complete, you might just get a few hard-luck stories tight on the far rail. Otherwise, it’s beautiful to ride.
